CYNDA WILLIAMS – “Harlem blues” (Acapulco version) - 1990

I have always been a big fan of Spike Lee movies. Here’s a beautiful Jazzy performance by actress Cynda Williams taken from the 1990 soundtrack “Mo’ better blues” released on Columbia Records.

Note that this song is a remake of W.C. Handy’s classic and this original adaptation is arranged by great musician Raymond Jones (original member of the group CHIC!)

NICHOLAS – “The closer I get to you” (1983)

Wonderful remake of the MTUME’s 1978 classic which was also a big hit by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. This version here is treated in a soulful Gospel fashion second to none. Check out the spoken intro. Taken from their LP “Words can’t express” released on Word/Epic Records in 1983.
