NICHOLAS – “The closer I get to you” (1983)

Wonderful remake of the MTUME’s 1978 classic which was also a big hit by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. This version here is treated in a soulful Gospel fashion second to none. Check out the spoken intro. Taken from their LP “Words can’t express” released on Word/Epic Records in 1983.

    "Nicholas" were there before The Winans , Commissioned et al moved Gospel into upfront contemporary. Their albums always contained songs which had overtly gospel lyrics, but were song in a contemporary soul fashion. They were ahead of their time.
    This brings back good memories for me.
